Thogarihunkal Estate, a premier highland coffee estate located on the rolling hills of Baba Budangiri in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, has been involved in high-quality coffee growing since 1857. Managed by the Gowda brothers, Mallanna and Chenna Basave, the estate lies at an altitude of 1350 meters (3500-4500 feet) amidst the slopes of the Outer Giris in the Western Ghats region. This location benefits from an average annual rainfall of 75 inches, creating an ideal environment for cultivating the finest Arabica beans. The legacy of high standards in coffee production was established by T.B. Malle Gowda and furthered by his son, T.B. Nagesh Gowda, who both played pivotal roles in evolving the estate to its current elevated standards, catering to the demanding and quality-conscious coffee market.
Thogarihunkal Estate maintains separate blocks for Arabica and Robusta coffee, which are further segregated by varietal. The Arabica varieties grown on the estate include Chandragiri, Selection 795, and micro lots of Selections 5 and 7. Grown under a three-tier canopy at an altitude of 3500-4500 feet, the beans are handpicked and freshly roasted to ensure a unique flavor and a rejuvenating experience.
In addition to producing high-quality coffee, Thogarihunkal Estate is deeply invested in the well-being of its workers. The estate provides housing, schooling for their children, and on-site healthcare facilities. They also have a dedicated water treatment plant and limit the use of pesticides, showcasing their commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.
To ensure the finest quality of green coffee, Thogarihunkal Estate employs modern processing facilities. These include two pulping units, multiple fermentation tanks, spacious drying yards, and raised beds. These facilities are essential for transforming coffee cherries into premium green coffee beans, ready for the market.
